INTERCOOLING

Intercooling options.

Once you have the fuel air mixture correct at the boost you want to run, the next thing to consider is inter cooling in some way by either air to air or air to liquid.

AIR TO AIR (ATA) - The disadvantage of ATA is the possibility of increased lag or lack of response because of the distance the air has to travel from the filter to the cylinders which can be over five times as long as normal.
This drawback is overcome to some extent by making the pipes as large and smooth as possible to and from the cooler core. (as large as possible in frontal area and internal air flow)

AIR TO LIQUID (ATL) - Main benefit of ATL is that you can usually keep the intake length as short as possible and not suffer from excessive lag.
The relative efficiency of the ATL is greater than ATA for a similar core size as water can absorb and dissipate the heat quicker than air. One disadvantage is the added weight of the water which can be 50 lb. in an efficient system.

Example of different Intercoolers here
