She
said you shouldn't go out to the drags as you will
blow my car up!! Naaah... couldn't happen as I'm
just going out to do a few quick runs to sort out
the adjustment of the turbo to waste gate
plumbing.
Well headed out to Calder leaving work early
determined to do a 13 as I had only managed to get
one run in (14.8et 2.6s 0-60) the other week as I
got there around seven o'clock.
Scrutineering was a pain as the scrutinizers were
more interested telling a guy in the other lane
that he couldn't run into 11's as he had no roll
cage.( he also had a 454 with nitrous so that
could have made them nervous!)
Finally into the staging after waiting a while and
up against an EXA. While he was doing a massive
burnout I rolled to the staging lights as no point
with AWD. I timed it well and
xxx WON
Next run against a Nissan Pulsar GTi-R.
xxxWon
Next run and I was worried as it was a new XR6
Turbo UTE. Thought he would take me but I managed
to hook up well off the line and got the jump on
him(14.8) and didn't see him again. Won again but
only a 14.1!! NO 13!!
14.10 @98MPH 0-60 2.4s DAMN! 30 YEARS LATER and I
was nearly going as hard as my
AP5 Valiant 225 Slant Six in 1972 out at Calder!!
Had to give it one last try. Made the usual
mistakes... turned fuel pressure up ..advanced
timing..adjusted boost...now we would see.
By the time I got back to the timing box I had
unknowingly lost most of my engine coolant and had
steam (or smoke as I first thought) coming from
under the hood. Jumped out with the fire
extinguisher after popping the hood catch.
One
look at the coolant Air Bleed Chamber and I could
see there was no water in the motor and I was in
big trouble! Going to the boot to get my torch
told me the water had gone out in a big way going
down the track as the whole back of the boot was
covered in green coolant spray. Great!
Now can I fix it to get home? - No way as my torch
battery was nearly flat and I couldn't even find
the leak. Even the RACV guy who fronted up an hour
later had no luck. Can you say FLAT TRAY? Was not
looking forward to arriving home to the wife with
HER car on a Tow Truck. $67 and a few hours later
I was able to quickly start the car and drive it
into the garage where it was going to have another
long rest!
The blown hose, near impossible to fix from above.
