THE Nissan
Skyline HR32 GTS-t RB20DET Engine
is renowned as an
extremely strong and durable high revving power
plant.
The basic
reciprocating components are very strong and the
crankshaft and connecting rods are forged steel. The
cast pistons are able to with stand power outputs up
to around 280kW dependent on intelligent fine tuning
to the Fuel & Timing as long as the support
infrastructure is in place to prevent detonation. This
is probably at the upper limit of the potential output
and would need Forged pistons to venture further to
ensure worry free operation for any period of time.
Other important
considerations are the Fuel supply system, including
larger injectors & higher flow pump as well as a means
to control it all. The R32 is the only Skyline that
has a tuneable ECU computer if you can find the right
person to do the job on a Dyno in real time. As there
are so few in Australia that have the capability it is
probably worth fitting an aftermarket unit like the
also hard to get AP Engineering Power FC from APEXi.
This is a
specially modified PFC to suit the RB20DET. Of course
there is also many other options now available, so
there is no excuse to not have a well tuned Skyline.
The key to making power beyond the standard level up
to almost double is the right selection of aftermarket
turbocharger to increase airflow.
Turbo-Charger
selection is one of the most difficult choices to make
as there is no one exact solution to producing the
amount of airflow & boost you need to make your target
power with the drivability you will accept for most
common driving conditions. There are so many possible
combinations available from different manufacturers
that it is worth getting good advice off the net from
other owners of similar modified RB's.
Ben's Skyline GTS-t has been
extensively modified for presentation and power
production.
