At first I wondered if I was doing the right thing test driving the spiritual relative of my very first Mitsubishi, the
JA '82 Starion.
After all a quick test drive twenty years ago had induced me to part with a considerable amount of money for the thrill of being able to look forward to driving it every day in my job as a mainly on the road rep.
I had only gone to the dealers to check out a new Cordia turbo they had advertised for around $14K (This was 20 Years ago, right!)
Offset
Number Plate allows more air to go through the intercooler making sure of no
detonation..
Now obviously the Starion was at that time a very well respected performance coupe having won
Group 'N' Stock Production racing for three years running and also acquitting itself well at Bathurst over five years. The Starion had the record of quickest down
"Conrod Straight" at one time also as well as coming inside the top ten every year with
fifth outright the best a four cylinder could do against the V8 Ford and GM opposition.
Well you should realise this, as the Mitsubishi Starion was the first real performance four cylinder
(4G63) turbo to win worldwide in many types of motorsport events against some heavy opposition in the mid eighties. There was even a AWD rally version late in the series life that unfortunately was not carried over to production.
The real rally production platform afterwards was the conquering Galant AWD and then the Lancer and its evolution models that are now virtually known as
"EVO's".
Angle
of attack adjustable rear spoiler gives the right amount of downforce for those
different racetracks!
You probably realise the power and performance of the EVO is up there next to the WRX and GT-R such is the rally winning ways of these quick and strong small fours.
Tommi Makinen is one driver that has taken the EVO to glory over all comers on the world rally
stage(s). While not winning all the time he has done enough to highlight the tough reputation that these Mitsubishis have much to the dismay of Subaru, Toyota and Ford.
